It can trail over a wall or be staked to become an upright weeper. The full sun causes burning in the Northwest on young plants which disappears as the plant matures. (3)

Picea abies 'Wichtel' - a very special new plant

For fifteen years we have been growing 'Wichtel' in our gardens . We have two specimens, each about 9" across and 5" high. Each one looks like a chunk of wood covered with green moss. The growth rate last year was about 1/16".
We have a small block of plants propagated, fertilized and grown in 60% shade seven years ago to produce graftable scion wood. Now they are starting to tighten up, so this is the last year they can be cut. I have selected young plants from a crop of three years ago to provide scion wood for the next few years. That means we can now sell our first set of stock plants.
Since it took us fifteen years to be able to list 'Wichtel' for sale, I doubt that this cultivar will be readily available anywhere else.
Due to the rarity and our large investment of time and effort, we are charging a premium price for these plants and the supply is limited.
Anyone purchasing one of these plants should follow the following steps to have the greatest success in growing it. First plant it in well drained soil with afternoon shade. (The hot summer sun will scorch it- a common problem with miniature Picea abies cultivars.) Second, do not overwater. Third, do not remove the understock completely for at least three years and do the removal in stages so that the last year you are removing a leafless stem.
If you do your own grafting, you should be able to obtain a few tiny scions during the first year or two. After that, the wood will be too small for a good success rate.

 Picea abies 'Wichtel'

There is some debate as to the origin of this cultivar, but apparently it originated in the Hillier Arboretum near Winchester, England as a diminutive witches' broom on Picea abies 'Humilis'. The cultivar 'Humilis' is noted for having different growth rates in different parts of the plant, giving the appearance of different witches' brooms; however, this one has been propagated many times and has proven to be stable.  The picture above to the left shows the average sized plant we are offering for sale.
