Picea orientalis 'Skylands'/Picea orientalis 'Nutans' Experimentation
Spring, 2005 I pollinated cones on an older Picea orientalis 'Skylands' with pollen from Picea orientalis 'Nutans'. The seedlings germinated last spring. I had approximately 200 little seedlings growing in rose pots. Birds got about half of them but I still have just under 100 in a protected location under observation. I will need at least two years to see anything other than color differences. Right now I have about 50% green and 50% yellow seedlings. That shows me the 'Nutans' pollen must be working since 'Skylands' will produce all yellow seedlings when self pollinating.
My goal is a 'Skylands' that grows like 'Nutans'.
