HOUSE GARDENS
THE HOUSE ROCK GARDEN
The first garden to be developed in the Fincham Pinetum, The Rock Garden was originally a steep slope that remained when the pad was prepared for our home. The initial plantings of conifers and alpines were in the subsoil and glacial till that remained. The soil was not amended and the till provided the rocks.
This past year we renovated the garden. We retained the conifers, adding a few where needed, and expanded the alpine assortment. The alpines were carefully dug and boulders of feather rock (pumice) from California were placed among the conifers. When the alpines were replanted, many new ones were added to the collection. After planting, the garden was mulched with rainbow gravel from Idaho.
The Rock Garden is the first garden toured by visitors and greets us every time we leave our house.
NORTH HOUSE GARDEN
The North Garden extends from the north side of our house to the property line. People entering our gate walk along this garden to our patio area and the house rock garden.
Our domestic well and pump/storage shed are in the center of this garden along with an assortment of Quercus robur, Fagus sylvatica, Acer platanoides, and a wide assortment of conifers.
SOUTH HOUSE GARDEN
The south garden has a nice conifer assortment and the two oldest Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea Nana' in the country. It was originally intended to be an azalea garden but the lack of shade soon changed this intent. Besides, conifers take priority.
This garden screens the gallon retail area from the house.
WEST HOUSE GARDEN
This garden started out as a small patch of grass that reverted to a conifer garden after eight years. It includes a nicely maturing house foundation planting as well as a border planting to delineate the edge of the terrace and a steep slope down to the central conifer gardens.
